OVERVIEW

This journey through Phuket is a delightful blend of culture and cuisine, set in a city recognized by UNESCO for its gastronomic heritage. Beginning with an exploration of Phuket Old Town, we dive into the island's culinary landscape, savoring Hokkien fried noodles, local snacks, and discovering the unique Phuket Baba cuisine at the Thaihua Museum. Dinner at the charming Tu Kab Khao Restaurant in a colonial mansion introduces us to traditional Phuket dishes. The next day, we learn the art of Thai cooking at the Blue Elephant Restaurant, with a market visit and hands-on cooking class, followed by a tour of the Chalong Bay Rum Distillery. Our final day includes a local dim sum breakfast, scenic views from Rang Hill, and a long-tail boat ride to a floating seafood restaurant, all culminating in a flavorful and unforgettable experience on this cultural and culinary journey through Phuket.

Day 1 : Phuket (- / L / D)

Food glorious food is the focus of our exploration in a destination listed as a City of Gastronomy by UNESCO. Upon arrival at Phuket International Airport, we transfer to the hotel to check-in. Phuket is an enticing melting pot of different cultures and cuisines and our discovery starts with a stroll around Phuket Old Town. We stop for brunch at Lock Tien Food Court to sample classic Hokkien fried noodles. Fully fuelled, we step off the island’s well-trodden tourist trail and explore a location that is home to classic Sino-Portuguese architecture.

Our itinerary includes a Chinese temple and more colonial-style mansions, a legacy of the tin mining boom that attracted people from afar in search of personal fortune. It is then time to sample more snacks at hawker stalls, followed by a visit to the Thaihua Museum to learn about Phuket Baba cuisine. This is a unique fusion of spicy southern Thai, Malay, Indian and Chinese dishes. In the evening, our gourmet quest continues with dinner at the renowned Tu Kab Khao Restaurant. This is set in a beautiful colonial building and classic Phuket dishes are on the menu. After a day of cultural and culinary journeying, we head back to the hotel.

Overnight at Casa Blanca Boutique Hotel.

Day 2 : Phuket (B / L / D)

Today’s activity equips us with a skill we can take back home to cook authentic Thai cuisine for friends and family. After breakfast at the hotel, we head to the Blue Elephant Restaurant, a magnificent establishment situated in the Governor’s Mansion in Phuket Old Town.

After a choice of drinks served in the Blue Elephant Bar, we head to the morning market to source fresh produce for our cooking class. The chef will supervise our purchases and we then head back to cook four courses under expert guidance.

The fruits of our labour are enjoyed in the elegant restaurant and a branded apron, menu booklet and certificate are given as mementoes. We then undertake some F&B instruction of a different kind as we learn how to craft artisanal rum at Chalong Bay Rum Distillery. The process involves the subtle blending of ingredients, including sustainably grown sugarcane. We also undertake a tour of the distillery.

Our final call is the Night market. This is a great place to browse curios and souvenirs and enjoy inexpensive, popular snacks such as spicy sausages, barbecued chicken and even insects, all washed down with drinks of our choice.

Overnight at Casa Blanca Boutique Hotel.

Day 3 : Phuket (B / L / -)

Phuket’s cuisine draws a strong influence from China and we explore this connection with a dim sum breakfast. We start the day with a visit to one of the island’s top dim sum restaurants to sample a few dishes and soak up the vibrant authentic atmosphere of a local eatery. In addition to dim sum, other options include congee with preserved eggs, pork ribs with Thai spices and noodle soup.

The discovery continues with a trip to Rang Hill, one of the best viewpoints on Phuket. This peak provides an impressive panorama of neighbouring islands and the interior hills that form ‘the spine’ of Phuket. We then take a long-tail boat from Laem Hin Pier to a floating restaurant, a lively eatery that bobs on the water. The menu highlight is the freshest seafood served al fresco with a cooling sea breeze.

After a hearty lunch, we return to the hotel and then transfer to Phuket International Airport for onward flights.
