Things to Do in Amphawa
1. Amphawa Floating Market
Amphawa's floating market is the town’s main attraction and operates every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from midday to around 9 p.m. This is less touristy than Damnoen Saduak Floating Market and more popular with locals. Vendors in traditional wooden boats sell a variety of Thai food, fruits, and souvenirs.
- Popular Dishes: Grilled seafood (prawns, squid), boat noodles, coconut desserts, and Thai iced tea.
- Best Time to Visit: Late afternoon, when the market becomes livelier.
2. Mae Klong Railway Market
Known as the "Umbrella Pulldown Market" or Talad Rom Hoop, this is a unique market where vendors sell their goods right on the train tracks. When the train approaches, the vendors quickly fold away their umbrellas and remove their goods to make way for the train. It’s an exhilarating sight!
- Train Times: The train passes 7-8 times a day, so plan your visit around the schedule to catch the action.
3. Wat Bang Kung
This unique Buddhist temple is located inside a giant banyan tree. The temple dates back to the Ayutthaya period and is part of a historical park. The tree roots engulf the temple, creating a mystical atmosphere. Inside, there’s a large golden Buddha statue, and the temple is also associated with the history of the 18th-century Thai-Burmese war.
- Entry Fee: Free (though donations are appreciated).
4. Firefly Boat Tours
One of the most magical experiences in Amphawa is a night boat tour along the Mae Klong River to see fireflies. You’ll cruise past mangroves and witness trees glowing with hundreds of tiny fireflies, creating a serene and romantic experience.
- Cost: Around 60-100 THB per person for a group tour.
- Best Time: Right after sunset (7:30-9:30 p.m.).
5. King Rama II Memorial Park
This beautifully landscaped park is dedicated to King Rama II, who was born in Amphawa. The park features traditional Thai houses, some of which have been converted into a museum showcasing artifacts and art from the early Rattanakosin period.
- Entry Fee: 30-50 THB.
- Opening Hours: 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
6. Explore the Canals by Boat
Aside from the floating market, you can take longtail boat tours to explore Amphawa’s picturesque canals, passing through coconut plantations and traditional wooden houses on stilts. It’s a relaxing way to experience local life and the serene atmosphere of the town.
