OVERVIEW

The richest, most lush, and most densely populated of Indonesia ‘s Island, Java has an extraordinarily diverse landscape, from towering volcanoes to dense forest, manicured rice paddies and teeming cities. Measuring 620 miles long and 40 – 125 miles wide, Java is the country ‘s educational, manufacturing, and political center. It was the focus of Indonesian wealth and power long before the Dutch concentrated their activities there, thanks largely to the early development of wet-rice cultivation imported from India. Though 90% of Javanese profess to be Muslims, only 5-10 percent follows a Javanese version that combines Islamic mysticism with Hinduism and local superstition. Most of the rest is only nominal Muslims, whose beliefs owe more to animism and Indo-Javanese tradition.

The famous Wayang theater is almost wholly non-Islamic, and leading politicians are often influenced by mystic teachers, black magicians, and healers. Java produces the world ‘s best batik (the word is derived from a Javanese meaning fine point but in practice means wax printing). Batik used for every day as well as formal clothing, and for decorative purposes. Other art forms particularly dance; music and painting have a long history.

Day 6 : Yogyakarta – Borobudur & Prambanan Discovery (B / - / -)

Today we take a step back in time on a temple exploration trip to Borobudur and the Prambanan temple complex. Our first stop takes us to the world’s largest Buddhist monument complex, Borobudur. This UNESCO listed site dates back to the 9th century and the striking structure pierces through a patchwork of bottle-green paddies and swaying palms.

After the decline of Buddhism and shift of power to East Java, the monument was abandoned soon after its completion and for centuries lay forgotten, buried under layers of volcanic ash. We will climb to certain level to soak up stunning vistas of the Menoreh Mountains (subject to weather conditions) before strolling through the complex.

We then continue to a nearby smattering of temples, including Pawon and Mendut, before driving to Prambanan village to visit the Prambanan Temple Complex. Also known as the complex of Lorojongrang, this Hindu temple dates back to the 9th century when Java was ruled by the Hindu Sanjayas of Old Mataram in the north. It consists of three main ornately decorated temples.

(Please kindly note the queue to be able to step up on certain level to Brorobudur Temple will be available on your arrival. There is a local restriction to obey before entering the temple)

Day 8 : Bromo – Surabaya (B / - / -)

Watch the sunrise unveil Bromo, Batok and Semeru volcanoes, followed by a climb of Mount Bromo for an entirely different perspective. Departing at around 4 am, we transfer in a four-wheel drive vehicle to Penanjakan to witness the sunrise (weather permitting) from a platform near the smouldering volcanic complex of Tengger Massif.

Next, we cross to Mount Bromo’s foot to climb the stairs to the crater to peer inside this rumbling volcano.

After our descent, we return to the hotel to refresh and then transfer to Surabaya Airport for next extension flight.

Lunch and dinner are to your own account.

Please note: The walk-up Mount Bromo is not suitable for those with walking difficulties. It is possible to ride horseback (surcharge applies) although this is not recommended due to the ill treatment of the horses.

The ideal time to visit this destination is during the dry season, from April to November. Throughout the year, the mountain night temperatures are around 2-5 °C. Due to the popularity of Bromo Tengger National Park, the platform at Mount Penanjakan can get busy during weekends and on public holidays.
