Several poets and philosophers lived here, and this is the place where the Biblical miracle of the Gadarene swine took place. In Umm Quais you see ruins of theatres and colonnaded streets and have an overwhelming view over the north Jordan Valley, the Golan Heights and the Sea of Galilee. Best time to visit is spring when the surrounding hills are lush and green. We continue then to Jerash, the best example of a Roman provincial city in the whole Middle East.
The well preserved ruins had been hidden for centuries in sand, before the excavations started in 1925. Wander along the spectacular Forum, paved and colonnaded streets, the Nymphaeum, theatres and the Temple of Artemis.

Stop at nice viewpoints over the city; the Abu Jaber Mansion housing now the Historic Old Salt Museum is worth a visit.
Back in Amman, explore more of the bustling capital of Jordan. Though already mentioned in the Bible as Rabbat Ammon, the city is modern with only a few ancient attractions we visit today. Head downtown to explore the Citadel hill with remains from the Roman to the early Islamic period and a small Archaeological Museum.
Onto the opposite Roman Theatre from the 2nd century with 6,000 seats. From here stroll along the vibrant Souq with its different shops and stalls. We stop in Jabal Amman at Rainbow Street with its charm of early 20th century houses, cafés and restaurants.

Start with a walk to canyon, the so-called Siq, at its end you see the most beautiful monument, the Treasury. The building rises over 40 meters, and is carved into the sandstone like most of Petra’s architecture. Continue via the Street of Facades, passing by the Theatre to the Royal Tombs. From Petra the journey takes us 1.5 hours to Wadi Rum. Check into your campsite, where dinner and the desert night with a hopefully starry sky awaits you.
