OVERVIEW
A different way to explore Palermo (rich in UNESCO World Heritage monuments) driving a Vespa scooter, one of the symbols of the “Italian way of life”. Driving by yourself the Vespa, you will have freedom of movement. In six days, you will explore the capital city of Sicily (and its surroundings). You will have the opportunity as well to taste the local food and profit of some half days at leisure to learn more about this city with thousands-year history.
DAY 1 : ARRIVAL IN PALERMO
Arrival in Palermo. You will reach on your own the BB in Mondello or Optional transfer and overnight.
DAY 2 : PALERMO UNESCO ITINERARY
Breakfast in hotel Today you will have the opportunity to explore the historic centre of Palermo. Palermo has been dominated from the 9th to the 11st centuries by the Arabs. In the 11st and 12nd centuries they were replaced by the Normans; from the mix of these two people is born the “Arabic-Norman” architecture style, that one can find just in Sicily. In 2017 some of such monuments have been inserted in UNESCO World Heritage, and these are the “highlights” of this half day tour. From the hotel by public bus we will reach the Cathedral (in its interior are the tombs of the emperor Frederick II and of some Norman kings). We will enjoy the stunning view of the cathedral as well from the balconies of the Palazzo Asmundo, an aristocratic palace of the 18th century, a “museum of itself”. Before to continue our walking tour we will taste one of the typical Sicilian beverages in a kiosk.
Continuation (through a palms garden) to the Royal Palace (called as well Norman Palace), seat of the Sicilian kings and vice-kings from the 11st to the 19th centuries; here we will admire some halls in different styles and the Palatine Chapel, where a jewel of architecture are its polychrome marbles and colored mosaics on a golden background. We finish the visit in front of the Porta Nuova (New Gate), erected on the 16th century and if you wish you can visit the popular market “Il Capo”, that looks like an Arabic souk, where local people prefer to buy the local food, in a mix of colours, flavours and smells.

DAY 3 : EXCURSION TO MONREALE
Breakfast Today you will pick-up the Scooter at the rental company (the VESPA are delivered in the morning after arrival at a time to be determined, presumably from 09:00 to 09:30) with instructions of the vehicle and signing the rental contract and drive to Monreale, a village 7 km far from Palermo, world famous because of its magnificent Cathedral (UNESCO World Heritage as well), in Arab-Norman style with its 3.500 square meters of polychrome mosaics on a golden background, representing scenes of the Old and New Testament.
Close to the cathedral (that host the tombs of other Norman as well kings) we will visit the cloister, with its 80 couples of twinned columns, each one different from the others. In a corner of the cloister is the Arabic fountain. You can continue the visit of the Fleas Market, the Christian Catacombs and the Arabic-Norman church St John of the Hermits.
Overnight
DAY 4 : BAGHERIA AND CEFALU’
Today’s tour will take you in two interesting places of the northern coast of Palermo. First stop is Bagheria, city chosen in the 18th and 19th century by the aristocratic families of Palermo to spend the summer holidays. For this purpose, they built imposing villas, one of which can be visited. The Villa Palagonia (also called "villa of the monsters" due to the statues depicting non-real characters that stand on the surrounding walls) dates back to the 18th century and will enchant you with its rich halls.
At the end of the visit you will ride the Vespa, driving towards Cefalù, one of the top touristic destinations in Sicily. Cefalù, medieval fishers’ village, at the slopes of a promontory, hosts a UNESCO World Heritage site as well, the Arabic-Norman Cathedral, that looks like a fortress. The cathedral was erected by the Norman King Roger II as its own burial seat (not used anymore for this purpose); for this reason, the polychrome mosaics on a golden background were positioned just in the apse and not in the sides of the cathedral. We will then walk in the narrow streets and admire the medieval washhouse, still used till the 50’. Time at leisure to admire the beach, to do shopping or to visit on its own the Mandralisca Museum, that hosts the “Portrait of Unknow Man” of the famous Sicilian painter Antonello da Messina. Back to Palermo.
Overnight
DAY 5 : ISOLA DELLE FEMMINE AND CAPACI
On this day you can enjoy moments of relaxation by the sea, on the beautiful beach near Palermo, which extends from the village of Isola delle Femmine to that of Capaci. Villagees chosen by the Palermitans to spend their summer holidays by the sea, not far from Palermo. The view from these beaches extends from the islet of Isola delle Femmine (in front of the village of the same name) to Punta Raisi, where the Palermo airport is located, with beautiful mountains behind it. On this beach you can also decide to rent deck chairs and umbrellas and have a fish-based lunch in one of the many restaurants.
