OVERVIEW

This Javanese immersion tour combines culture, history and awe-inspiring natural wonders, including a stay at a Dutch colonial hotel to set the tone. Starting in the cool mountain air of the Losari Spa Retreat and Coffee Plantation Resort, we learn about Java’s famous coffee industry, before stepping back in time to explore the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Borobudur and Prambanan. We watch the world go by in Yogyakarta’s walled city, strolling along local markets, rise early to reveal the smouldering Tengger Massif volcanic complex and are left awestruck as we watch miners perilously retrieve sulphur from Mount Ijen. This 10-day adventure fulfils all our senses and it is concluded with a taste of Bali where we learn how rubber is produced.

Day 1 : Arrival Semarang / Yogyakarta – Magelang (- / - / -)

Our journey to the Losari Spa Retreat and Coffee Plantation Resort in Magelang follows a scenic route, whether we arrive in Semarang or Yogyakarta. We are met and greeted at both airports and transferred to the hotel, where upon arrival the rest of the afternoon is free to enjoy the wellness, cultural and educational facilities of this Dutch colonial style hotel. 

Arrivals from the Ahmad Yani International Airport Semarang go via Ambarawa and stop to admire the landscape of the Pening Lake and Mount Merababu and arrivals from the New Yogyakarta International Airport, stop at the Ketep Pass to admire Mount Merapi. 

Lunch and dinner are to your own account.

Overnight in Magelang

Day 2 : Free Program Joining Resort Activities (B / - / -)

Set your own pace to enjoy the daily wellness activities before joining a coffee plantation tour in the afternoon. This tour starts from the hotel’s 1828 Club House and our experienced hotel staff member will guide us through the plantation and give us an insight into coffee, from the growing to the grinding stages. 

We will walk through the patchwork of terraces to see how organic coffee is grown, picked and sun-dried. At the coffee shed, we observe coffee roasting and grinding processes that follow traditional Javanese traditional techniques, before stopping at the wooden coffee bar to enjoy a cup of traditional Javanese coffee and other herbal concoctions. 

The tour continues with a visit to the mushroom cultivation house and concludes at the vegetable garden where the hotel grows organic vegetables used in the restaurant.

Overnight in Magelang

Day 3 : Magelang – Borobudur – Yogyakarta (B / L / -)

Marvel at Borobudur, the world’s largest Buddhist monument and a UNESCO World Heritage Site that dates back to the 9th century. After the decline of Buddhism and shift of power to East Java, the monument was abandoned soon after its completion and for centuries lay forgotten, buried under layers of volcanic ash. 

We will strolling around Borobudur from the ground level only and learning about the history of Buddhism in Indonesia

Afterwards we visit nearby temples such as Candi Pawon and Mendut before transferring to Yogyakarta to check-in to our hotel.

Overnight in Yogyakarta

Day 4 : Yogyakarta City Tour – Prambanan Temple (B / L / -)

Gain an insight into Yogyakarta’s rich history on this fascinating tour of Indonesia’s beating cultural heart. We start at the Kraton which is a prime example of traditional Javanese palace architecture and the seat of the reigning Sultan of Yogyakarta and his family. 

Over 25,000 people live within the greater Kraton compound of Taman Sari, which houses a market, shops, cottage industries, schools and mosques. 

Please note: The Sultan’s Palace opens every day from 8.30 am to 13.30 pm, but closes on Friday at 11 am and it is closed all day on Mondays, National and Kraton Holidays.

Next we precede to the Sonobudoyo Museum, followed by Kota Gede, the hub of the city’s silver industry where we visit a busy silversmith’s workshops. We also take in the splendour of Prambanan, which consists of three major temples: Candi Shiva Mahadeva, Candi Brahma and Candi Vishnu and further, enjoy lunch overlooking this impressive site. Our exploration also includes the Water Castle. Dinner which is to your own account 

The Sonobudoyo Museum is closed on Mondays.

Overnight in Yogyakarta

Day 5 : Yogyakarta – Solo – Malang (B / L / -)

Observe locals trading their goods as we browse traditional markets on our journey from Yogyakarta to Malang. Starting early, we depart for Solo, a city north-east of Yogyakarta, to visit Pasar Klewer, a market selling textiles and diverse produce. 

Next, we proceed to a market in Mantingan that is famed for products such as teak, mahogany and birds, before continuing to the Pujon Highlands where we explore agricultural villages that produce dairy products, garlic and shallots. In the evening we arrive in Malang and check-in to our hotel. The tour duration is ten to twelve hours.

Overnight in Malang

Day 6 : Malang – Bromo Sunrise – Bromo (B / L / -)

Watch the sun rise over majestic Bromo, Batok and Semeru volcanoes, followed by a climb up Mount Bromo for an entirely different perspective, on this inspirational excursion. We depart from our Malang hotel at around midnight for Penanjakan and witness this natural spectacle (if weather permits) from a platform and then climb the stairs up Mount Bromo for a sublime view that will leave lasting memories. 

After our descent, we drive to Probolinggo village to check-in to our hotel and the rest of the day is free to spend at leisure.

Please note: The walk up Mount Bromo is not suitable for those with walking difficulties. It is possible to ride horseback (surcharge applies) although this is not recommended due to the bad treatment of the horses. The ideal time to visit this destination is during the dry season, from April to November. Throughout the year, the mountain night temperatures are around 2-5 °C. Due to the popularity of Bromo Tengger National Park, the platform at Mount Penanjakan can get busy during weekends and on public holidays.

Overnight in Bromo

Day 7 : Bromo – Ijen (B / L / -)

Admire the lush, rural landscape on Java’s northern coast that is rich in corn, rice and sugarcane plantations as we travel to Ijen. We break the journey in the afternoon at Pasir Putih, a fishing village filled dotted with colourful traditional fishing boats, before continuing to Bondowoso Regency, which is renowned for its Arabica coffee production and tobacco, vanilla and cacao plantations that line along the roadside. 

Upon arrival at Ijen, we check-in to our hotel and the rest of the day is free to spend at leisure. The total tour duration is six to seven hours. 

Breakfast is included at the hotel. Lunch is at a local restaurant. Dinner is to your own account.

Day 8 : Ijen Crater Excursion – Bali by Ferry - Pekutatan (B / L / -)

Soak up the apocalyptic like scene of Mount Ijen’s eerie coloured sulphuric Crater Lake, set against its surrounding sheer rugged walls. After rising early and breakfast, we drive in a four-wheel vehicle to the slope of Mount Ijen on a journey that takes us through picturesque rural villages and past coffee and clove plantations and lush rainforests. 

We exit our vehicle at the park ranger’s post to commence our hike up the crater to the rim at 2,799 metres, taking about 90 minutes to two hours. At the summit, we rest to admire the views and observe local miners descending into the crater to load sulphur into their bamboo baskets, ahead of climbing back up along a treacherous path. 

After our descent, we transfer by private car to Ketapang Harbour to board the ferry to Bali and upon arrival drive to the hotel. The journey time from Ijen to Ubud/South Bali is about five hours.

Overnight in Pekutatan

Day 9 : Discover Pulukan State Farm – Ubud (B / L / -)

Join an educational tour at the State Farm of Pekutatan to learn how rubber, a vital Indonesian export, is produced and processed. Spread over a vast area, Pekutatan is a lush site with coconut and banana plantations, as well as clove and vanilla trees. Here we learn about rubber and observe how it is made at the rubber processing factory. 

Afterwards we return to the hotel to freshen up, before continuing on our drive to Ubud. The total tour duration is seven to eight hours. Breakfast is at the hotel.

Overnight in Ubud

Day 10 : Ubud – South Bali / Airport (B / - / -)

The morning is free to spend at leisure until we check-out. At the appropriate time we transfer to the airport for our onwards flight. 

The check-out time is usually 12 noon and the use of a day room until 6 pm is subject to availability and a surcharge.
