Datong (大同), located in northern Shanxi Province near the Inner Mongolian border, is a city rich in history and culture. Once the capital of the Northern Wei Dynasty (386–534 AD), it is most famous for the Yungang Grottoes, one of China's greatest Buddhist treasures.
