OVERVIEW

Vientiane is not your average capital. Heavily influenced by the French, the seat of the Laotian government lacks aspects of what is described commonly as a hustle-and-bustle metropolis where time moves fast.

The contrary is the truth; tree-lined boulevards with small coffee corners, temples and religious shrines where a coming-and-going of the faithful may be the only traffic jam during that day, and where life takes on an even slower pace when settling down along the Mekong for the sun to set.

The aura of Laos’ kind-hearted city flows, not inadvertently, also further afield. A slightly different approach of Vientiane’s artistic and warm-hearted side comes in the shape of this almost full-day exploration of the often-overlooked side.

DAY 1 :  ARRIVAL  – VIENTIANE

Upon arrival at Vientiane airport, you will be met by our guide and transferred to the hotel. You have the rest of the day at leisure to settle into the hotel, or start exploring your new surroundings.

Option 1 : Vientiane by Night (B / - / -)

There is the option to take part in the evening activity; ‘Vientiane by Night’. Vientiane is no longer the metropolis of the night it was during the Vietnam War, but locals and visitors alike enjoy the cool night hours to amble the streets and settle with a drink. Start the evening with a stroll alongside the mighty Mekong River. The area has a vibrant, bustling atmosphere, with a mixed crowd of locals and visitors coming to shop, exercise, eat and drink cold beers. We continue to the night food market to discover authentic Laotian food. If you want to continue the evening escapades, your guide will point out the top bars for you to explore.

Dinner is at leisure on own account

DAY 2 : VIENTIANE – CITY TOUR BY BICYCLE (B / L / D)

08:30 we continue our discovery of Vientiane by bicycle today starting at the city’s oldest monastery Wat Sisaket, which dates back to 1818. We continue to nearby Ho Phrakeo. This former royal temple now stands as a museum of Buddhist Art and Sculpture.

We then visit the lively morning market of Talat Sao to browse the colorful array of locally-produced goods, which make great souvenirs.

Lunch is at a local restaurant before we move on to That Luang. Standing as a national monument, the golden temple is the most sacred shrine in Laos. According to legend, it dates back to the 3rd century when a missionary from India built a stupa to house a breastbone of Lord Buddha. The current 44-metre tall temple was built in 1566 when Vientiane became the capital. We stop at Patuxai (the Victory Monument) to enjoy views of the city before visiting That Dam stupa and taking a stroll to Nam Phou Square.

Dinner is at a local restaurant.

DAY 3 : VIENTIANE – DEPARTURE (B / - / -)

After breakfast, you have the rest of the day at your leisure before your onward flight. Take the time to relax, or forge some last-minute memories exploring the capital. Take a leisurely stroll along the Mekong River and through the charming city center; enjoy a local coffee and snacks at one of the many street eateries that dot the city; indulge in a massage at a spa; or explore some of the temples that line the town’s roads.

Other activities include a visit to the COPE (Cooperative Orthotic and Prosthetic Enterprise) Visitor Centre. This organization produces artificial limbs, walking aids and wheelchairs for landmine victims. The facility’s visitor center is home to a range of informative multimedia exhibits about prosthetics and the unexploded ordnance and landmines that still litter the countryside.

We will then transfer to the airport for the onward leg of your journey.
