OVERVIEW

This is one of our Sustainable Trails, a tour that maximizes positive impacts on local communities and minimizes negative impacts on the environment in the following ways : Eat locally : Meals are cooked by local communities using delicious locally- sourced ingredients / Stay eco- friendly : Stay overnight at a lodge that immerses you in local nature in an environmentally-sensitive way / Experience meaningfully : Your visit to the Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre raises valuable funds for the conservation of the primates under their care.
 

Day 1 : Sandakan – Sepilok  (- / - / D)

Get stuck straight into this six-day wildlife adventure.

We meet at the Sandakan Airport and head to the Sepilok Area. After check-in at MY Nature Resort, we have free time to explore the lush tropical forest that surrounds the resort.

At 6 pm, we head to the flying squirrel platform to watch these graceful animals glide through the treetops. We will then return to the resort for dinner.

Day 2 : Sepilok – Selingan (B / L / D)

Today we are going to watch turtles in their natural habitat at Turtle Island. At 9.30 am, we meet at the hotel lobby and head to the jetty to board a boat for a one-hour cruise to the island which departs at 10.15 am, also known as Pulau Selingan. Forming part of Sabah National Park, Selingan is dedicated to green and hawksbill turtle conservation.

Upon arrival, we register at the park’s headquarters and check-in to our chalet ahead of a leisurely lunch. We then have the afternoon at our leisure.

After dinner, we set off on a night-time adventure turtle watching. Please note: Before dinner, ensure you have what you need for the evening, such as cameras and jackets. No lights or flashes are allowed. The chalets are 500 metres from the beach and there are no porters, meaning we carry have to carry our luggage from the boat to the chalet. There are luggage rooms at the jetty for your convenience.

Day 3 : Selingan - Abai (B / L / D)

Marvel at Borneo’s famed orangutans on this exceptional nature-based tour. At 7 am, we cruise to Sandakan jetty, where we enjoy breakfast before hitting the road for the world’s largest orangutan rehabilitation sanctuary in Sepilok. Here, we can watch these incredible creatures being fed, before viewing the pioneering work being carried out to safeguard rescued sun bears.

We then board a boat at Sandakan town which departs at 12pm and cruise through mangrove forests to Abai Jungle Lodge which is nestled on the idyllic Kinabatangan River. After lunch, we embark on a river cruise in search of the long-nose proboscis monkey and other wildlife. As the sun sets, we can watch the waterway flicker to life with magical fireflies.

After dinner on the resort’s jetty, we continue our adventure and explore the jungle at night with a nature walk in search of nocturnal wildlife, including birds, snakes and insects.

Day 4 : Abai - Sukau (B / L / D)

The early bird catches the worm and waking early is rewarded with the sights and sounds of nature springing to life at dawn. We then embark on an early-morning river cruise to Pitas Lake to spot the plethora of wildlife that call the picturesque body of water home.

We then head to Abai Jungle Platform for breakfast, surrounded by nature. We then hit the water again for a scenic boat cruise to Sukau Village at 10 am.

Upon arrival, we then lunch and check-in at the Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge at about 12 pm, before setting off on a cruise at 4.30 pm along Menanggul River, a small tributary of the Kinabatangan in search of wild orangutans, rare proboscis monkeys and pygmy elephants. At 7.30 pm, we return to the lodge for dinner.

Day 5 : Sukau (B / L / D)

Rise to the call of gibbons and hornbills, followed by an early-morning river cruise to Ox-Bow Lake in search of exotic wildlife, while experiencing the tranquil river ambience along Sabah’s longest river. We return to the lodge in time for breakfast, with the rest of the morning at leisure.

At 12.30 pm, we enjoy lunch at a Sukau's villager’s house, or Sukau Lodge, with time to take a stroll through the village, or relax on the sundeck and soak up the river ambiance

At 4.30 pm, we hit the waters for another cruise in search of the abundance of wildlife. After dinner, we can opt to enjoy a film, with overnight at Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge.

Day 6 : Sukau - Sandakan (B / L / -)

Make the most of your last morning and rise ahead of dawn to watch the world spring to life. We can then enjoy a hearty breakfast surrounded by nature before we have to bid a fond farewell to our hospitable hosts and trade in the wild for civilisation.

After breakfast depart for the 7.30 am scheduled boat to Sandakan. Upon arrival, continue transfer for lunch before dropping off at Sandakan Airport for our onward flight(recommended flight depart after 1400hrs), or the transfer to the hotel.

This ends our six day walk on the wild side that has seen us view orangutans in their natural habitat, spot an array of wildlife during river cruises, hike through Borneo’s pristine rain forest in search of native creatures and watch graceful flying squirrels in action.

  • Tours and transfers with licenced English-speaking guiding services / assistance
  • Other languages are on request and are subject to availability
  • Transportation for tour and transfers by air-conditioned vehicle, unless otherwise stated
  • Return boat trip to/from Turtle Island or boat to/from Sukau/Abai are based on sharing basis only
  • Accommodation at MY Nature Resort, Abai Jungle Lodge & Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge and based on twin/triple share except 1 Pax rate based on single room and at Selingan Chalet, rooms are strictly based on twin share
  • All entrance fees for visits as mentioned in the program
  • All applicable taxes and service charges
  •  All meals as indicated in the program (food only)

Our services do not include :

  • 50% midnight surcharge for transfer pick between 23.00hrs to 07.00hrs
  • Personal expenses such as other meals, drinks, tips and gratuities, shopping, portage fees and optional tours/ visits, unless otherwise stated
  • Hotel accommodation in the destination of commencement
  • Any domestic / international airline tickets, airport taxes, visa fees, specific camera / video fees
  • Additional transportation cost from and to the general pick-up / drop-off regions (such as airports, out-of-town resorts, ports, harbours and accommodation in surrounding towns)
  • Any accommodation expenses of a personal nature. This includes (compulsory festive) meals and drinks, mini-bar consumption, laundry, room service, any telephone or other communication cost not mentioned in the program
  • International travel and medical insurance coverage for customers
