OVERVIEW

This 11-day tour contrasts the magnificent Bahian coastline with the lesser known but by all means no less spectacular inland regions. Experience the dramatic change in landscape during a 400 km drive, when the coast starts to disappear into the background, giving way to desert like inlands, and ahead; an unmistakable landscape characterized by vast table mountains, ravines and waterfalls.

Beginning in the cultural hub of Salvador da Bahia, time is spent walking the ancient streets of the historic Pelourinho district, absorbing the colonial past, and learning the more recent history of Afro-Brazilian movements and the region’s love affair with dance and self-expression. From Salvador, it is on to explore the hiking trails and natural wonders of the stunning Chapada Diamantina National Park, including complex cave systems and underground rivers. The adventure leads up to several days of indulgence and relaxation, courtesy of the idyllic island of Tinharé, where you will have the opportunity to do as much, or as little as you like.

Day 1 : Arrive into Salvador (- / - / -)

On landing in Salvador, a guide and vehicle will be ready to assist. From here, it is onward to the hotel to check in. The rest of the day can be enjoyed at leisure, relaxing after travel to build up energy for the coming days.

Day 2 : The History of Salvador (B / - / -)

This morning’s guided walking tour around the old town a great way to understand the unique energy of this magical place and its people. The Pelourinho district is located right in the heart of Salvador’s historical centre. Awash with colonial buildings and traditional churches dating from the 17th and 18th century; this UNESCO world heritage site is an eminent example of colonial history and symbol of the black movement in Brazil.

In addition to the churches, museums, galleries, and local artist studios, particular highlights of Pelourinho include; Novelist Jorge Amado’s House, São Francisco Church and the Cathedral Basílica, with the traditional Cravinho Bar being a great place to pick up some native food along the way! The tour passes the Pierre Verger Gallery, and the studio of Goya Lopes (a local textile designer who seeks inspiration from African-Brazilian influences in Bahia); ideal if looking for locally produced artwork and artefacts. Finally, it is on to Elevador Lacerda, a famous 19th-century mechanical lift connecting the Upper and Lower parts of the City still to this day.

Take in the panoramic views of the All Saints Bay before you descend the Elevador Lacerda for a visit to Mercado Modelo.

Day 3 : Travel to Chapada Diamantina, the backlands of Bahia (B / - / -)

Today, depart early with a guide in a private car, to board a pre-booked public bus, and head west to the town of Lençóis, the gateway to the stunning Chapada Diamantina National Park. This charming old diamond-mining town is full of character, with busy outdoor cafés and brightly painted colonial buildings, though the real highlights of this region wait in the neighbouring National Park.

The drive will be around 6 hours, plus stops along the way, so sit back and take in some of the surrounding scenery as you go. On arrival in Lençóis, make your way to the hotel for check-in, and relax for the rest of the day.

Journey time from Salvador bus station to Lençois: approx. 6 h (425 km)

Day 4 : Exploring the natural beauty of Chapada Diamantina (B / - / -)

Begin today with a beautiful walk along the banks of the Serrano River. The hike will lead through lush vegetation and past a series of waterfalls and natural plunge pools, allowing for ample opportunity to cool off and have a swim. A continual ascent will ultimately lead to Pedra do Mirante lookout point, the highest point of the trek and the perfect place to enjoy panoramic views over Lençóis; a fitting reward for all the effort getting there.

After lunch (not included), and only for the daring, test out the giant natural stone waterslide at Ribeirão do Meio. Alternatively, simply relax among these most natural surroundings, before heading back to the hotel.

Day 5 : The caves, the views and the sunset (B / - / -)

Making the most of the natural beauty in the state of Bahia, today travel with a guide to the cave complexes of Lapa Doce, Pratinha and Gruta Azul, a phenomenal site around 75 km from Lençóis. Here lies a system of crystal clear underground rivers, which connect spectacular caverns of stalagmites and stalactites. The water is irresistible, so take a swim and enjoy this unique experience while admiring the spectrum of colours created when sun rays refract through the caves and bounce off the walls.

Having dried off and emerged back in the daylight, the day ends with a late afternoon climb to the summit of Morro de Pai Inácio in time for a sunset like no other. Watch as the sun sets over the table mountains, canyons, gorges and ravines of Chapada Diamantina National Park, a truly memorable sight.

After sunset, the support vehicle will be ready and waiting for the journey back to the hotel.

Day 6 : Lençóis to Salvador (B / - / -)

This morning, travel from Lençóis to Salvador by bus, for one last opportunity to pay a visit to any restaurants, sites, and points of interest previously missed at the beginning of the trip. In the evening, a folklore show is a great way to get to know some of Bahia’s fascinating Afro-Brazilian cultural traditions, such as Candomblé and Capoeira.

Journey time from Lençois to Salvador bus station: approx. 6 h (425 km)

Day 7 : From the city to Tinharé Island (B / - / -)

Travelling to the unique and peaceful Tinharé Island is an excellent contrast from the time spent in the busy cultural hub of Salvador. Begin with a guide to the Salvador marina, in time for a 2.5-hour catamaran transfer to the Island. On arrival, porters will be on hand to help carry your luggage to the hotel. As there are few cars and roads on the Island, this is done on foot; a 20-minute walk with several ups and downs, so be sure to wear your walking shoes!

After the check-in, prepare for a few days of relaxation in the small town of Morro de São Paulo. This scenic beachfront village is situated on the most northern part of the Island and is flanked by palm trees, lush ferns and tropical flowers. The village itself is an unrefined gem, with many hidden treasures to find. There are plenty of beachfront restaurants to dine in, nearby walks to enjoy and local agencies offer a variety of activities including boat tours, kayaking and guided hikes to the Island’s most secluded beaches. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to visit Ilha de Boipeba, an island of rare natural beauty, home to a great variety of ecosystems as well as some of Brazil’s most pristine beaches.

Journey time from Salvador to Morro de São Paulo: approx. 2.5 h by catamaran (depending on weather conditions)

Days 8 to 10 : Days at leisure on Tinharé Island (B / - / -)

Day 11 : Homeward bound (B / - / -)

On the last day of the tour, a porter will be on hand at the required time to carry your luggage from the hotel to the port, in preparation for your catamaran crossing back towards Salvador, and onward to the airport.

Journey time from Morro de São Paulo to Salvador airport: approx. 2.5 h by catamaran (depending on weather conditions) + approx. 45 min. by car (30 km)
